KS 5 - MATHEMATICS

Students study the OCR Mathematics Syllabus. The AS/A2 mathematics course is open to students who achieve a B-A* and show a flair and sound working knowledge of the subject.

Year 12 AS
The AS course in Year 12 builds on and develops the techniques learned at GCSE by introducing students to topics fundamental to the advanced study of mathematics.

Core Mathematics Units C1 and C2
Consolidates basic GCSE skills such as number, thinking skills, algebra and their applications
Mechanics 1 Unit
Introduces students to the basic concepts which underlie the study of mechanics such a Newton’s Law vectors, motion and gravity. Topics also include:
- Mathematical modelling
- Kinematics
- Statics
- Dynamics

Students formulate models to specification, make simple deductions, comment on the model's usefulness and understand the particle model. Each unit is examined.

Year 13 A2
The A2 Mathematics course builds on the knowledge and skills gained at AS.

Core Mathematics Units C3 and C4
Develops the techniques learned in AS with particular emphasis on calculus. The comprehension task encourages students to appreciate the role of mathematics in their world and realise that they are acquiring lifelong skills.
Mechanics 2 Unit
Develops work covered in Mechanics 1 and extends the range of mechanics concepts, enabling students to use the rigid body model to specification, make simple deductions and comment on the model's usefulness.

The final grade is based on an examination in each unit and one piece of coursework for C3.
