KS 5 - BUSINESS STUDIES



The A Level Business Studies course, offered by OCR, encourages students to develop a critical understanding of business organizations and the markets in which they operate.  It explores key internal functions of a business and external influences on the organization.

The full A level consists of four units (two at AS level and two at A2 level).  All units are assessed by written examination.  There is no coursework.

Unit 1

  • An introduction to business.  Students gain an appreciation of the nature of business, learn how businesses can be classified, see what the objectives of businesses may be and consider external influences on business.

Unit 2

  • Business Functions.  Students study the four main functional areas of business: marketing; the role of accounting and finance; issues relating to people within organizations and the principles of operations management.

Unit 3

  • Optional unit - One of Marketing, Accounting, People in Organisations or Business Production.  We specialize in Accounting.  Students will understand the principles of business accounting with a particular focus on topics such as sources of finance, budgets, costs and costing, final accounts, investment appraisal.

Unit 4

  • Strategic Management.  Students will appreciate how business objectives and strategy are formulated and applied.  Students will also appreciate issues relating to business analysis.  A range of external influences will be considered as well as how organizations can deal with change.
