KS 5 - DRAMA



At Key Stage 5 the Edexcel Drama and Theatre Studies AS and A Level is offered. Study at this level will involve exploring contrasting plays from a theoretical, directorial, and performance perspective. Students engage in a wide variety of practical workshops and performance projects developing mature performance skills as well as developing skills in analysing and interpreting texts. Significant practitioners in the development of drama will be studied, such as Stanislavski and Brecht, as will the social, cultural, and historic contexts of plays and period in theatre history.

Year 12 AS

  • Unit 1 students study two contrasting plays and practitioners and produce a series of essays worth 20% of the overall A Level.
  • Unit 2 involves students working towards the performance of a scripted play, which is externally assessed and worth 30% of the overall A Level

Year 13 A2

  • Students devise a work for performance which is worth 20% of the final grade, and complete a written examination worth 30%. The written examination involves studying a set play, analysing professional theatre productions, and developing a contextual and performance understanding of a set period in theatre history.
  • Students should take this course if they have a genuine passion for Drama and the Theatre and are committed to developing their devising, performance, evaluative, and analytical skills. A grade C in GCSE English and either GCSE Drama or evidence of current commitment to Drama is required.
