

KS 5 - CHEMISTRY
The Edexcel Chemistry course is made up of 6 units studied over two years.
Year 12 AS
- Unit 1 - Core principles of Chemistry - assessed by a 1 hour and 15 minute examination:
- Section A: objective test questions
- Section B: mixture of short-answer and extended answer questions
- Unit 2 - Application of Core Principles of Chemistry - assessed by a 1 hour and 15 minute examination:
- Section A: objective test questions
- Section B: mixture of short-answer and extended answer questions
- Section C: contemporary context questions
- Unit 3 - Chemistry Laboratory Skills 1
- Practical assessments covering the areas of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. The unit is internally assessed by four separate activities testing students’ laboratory skills in four different ways
Year 13 A2
- Unit 4 - General Principles of Chemistry 1 - assessed by a 1 hour and 40 minute examination:
- Section A: objective test questions
- Section B: mixture of short-answer and extended answer questions
- Section C: data questions, with use of a data booklet
- Unit 5 - General Principles of Chemistry II - assessed by a 1 hour and 40 minute examination:
- Section A: objective test questions
- Section B: mixture of short-answer and extended answer questions
- Section C: contemporary context questions
- Unit 6 - Chemistry Laboratory Skills II
- Practical assessments covering the areas of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry. Students’ laboratory skills are tested in four different ways, through a choice of activities and pathways
The context studies include topics such as the atmosphere, Green chemistry, fuel cells, the pharmaceutical industry, the analysis of chemicals and supramolecular chemistry (nanotechnology).
