

KS 4 - TEXTILES
Textiles Technology GCSE is a creative course in which students experience sessions that allow them to demonstrate fully their design and technology capabilities.
The GCSE course covers:
- Materials and Components
- Design and Market Influences
- Process and Manufacture
During a 3 year GCSE programme students design and make different Textile products:
- Mobile phone holder - this is a key skills project in which students learn about colour exploration, quilting and the use of the sewing machine
- A Bag – involves an introduction to design, fabric construction, pattern modelling and product manufacture
- A Skirt or Garment - this is a project that explores design using commercial patterns and the manufacture of a garment
- Re-work project (recycling) – students are expected to re-design an existing product for example a T-shirt using many different Textile Techniques
- Cushion – students design and make a cushion inspired by a cultural influence and using the Textile knowledge learnt previous projects
Students use graphic techniques and ICT, including computer aided manufacture to develop, model and communicate design proposals. Different societies, age, cultural, environmental and historical issues need to be taken into account in the planning and designing of these products
The final grade is based on:
- Major Project - 20+ A3 page coursework folder and practical work and production of a ‘Final Product’ (60% of the total GCSE)
- A 2 hour written external examination in the final year (40% of the total GCSE)
