KS 4 - SCIENCE

In Years 9-11, students may either follow a vocational programme or an exam based programme.

Vocational Programme

Divided into 6 units of study. Each unit is comprised of practical and theoretical elements and is 100% coursework assessed. Students can achieve the equivalent of 4 GCSEs.

The units studied consist of

  • Forensic Science
  • The Science of Food
  • The Science of the Universe and Humanity
  • Optional unit of either Sports Science, the Science of Bodycare and Cosmetics or the Science of Construction

This vocational course provides students with relevant experience of science in the workplace and society in the 21st century. They work through topics such as renewable energies, calculating the energy efficiency of a wind turbine and working out how to minimize man’s impact on the environment.

Students are assessed through assignments, evidence for which is becoming increasingly electronic allowing students to exploit the use of hand held devices (iPODs, PSPs) in a laboratory context.
