KS 4 - DRAMA

Through Drama students develop their personal, interpersonal, creative, and academic skills.

At Key Stage 4, students are currently offered GCSE Drama and BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts Acting (equivalent to 2 GCSEs A-C). The Department is moving towards the BTEC First Diploma in Performing Arts Acting (equivalent to 4 GCSEs A-C).

The Edexcel Drama GCSE is assessed through 2 practical workshop examinations with written coursework. Students need to engage in character exploration and reflective discussions in class, and regularly complete written work to support this.

  • Unit 1 - Paper 1 involves students responding to stimulus, taking part in a range of drama activities and developing devised work
  • Unit 1 - Paper 2 follows a similar structure, but also involves the study of a play and theatre visit
  • Students develop a 25 minute performance, either scripted or devised, for a practical, externally assessed exam

The BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts Acting is assessed through performance work, teacher observation, and the key assessment element is a portfolio of evidence that students build through the course. Students develop skills and knowledge in 3 key areas: Acting, Devising, and Performing Plays.

Diploma students also study the performing arts industry, the history of theatre, different styles and genres. Whilst the focus is on practical exploration, the course involves written evidencing of work each lesson.

On each of the courses, a significant commitment is required from students with regard to after school rehearsals, trips, and written coursework.

On the Diploma course students are required to attend weekly after school rehearsals, for approximately an hour a week.
