KS 4 - TRAVEL AND TOURISM
All Key Stage 4 students study for the BTEC First Certficate, which is equivalent of 2 grades A* - C at GCSE. The course introduces students to the Travel and Tourism industry and consists of 3 separate units. The first helps students to understand the key features of the industry. The next introduces students to the concept of Customer Service and how this applies to Travel and Tourism. Finally students explore a number of European travel and tourism destinations and explore their appeal to different types of visitors.
Each unit is assessed by an assignment. There are no examinations. Assignments will have a number of formats including written reports, presentations and role-play.
Links with the industry are very important and students have to develop appropriate knowledge and skills. For instance in the Customer Service assignment they have to visit 2 organisations to find out their policies and procedures. They then test out 3 procedures by acting as “secret shoppers”. Finally in a number of role play activities they have to demonstrate their own skills at providing customer service and handling complaints. In the European Destinations unit students have to plan and cost a number of holidays using holiday brochures and Internet booking sites.
