

KS 3 - RESISTANT MATERIALS
The Resistant Materials course at Key Stage 3 gives students opportunities to:
- Communicate design proposals
- Select and use tools, equipment and processes, including CAD/CAM to shape and form materials safely and accurately and finish them appropriately
- Explore the properties of a range of contrasting materials, including softwood, Acrylic, Mild steel, Aluminum and smart materials
- Analyse products and judge the quality of other people's products
Students complete two projects in Year 7 and two in Year 8 that incorporate resistant materials:
- character on a wire (Year 7)
- design a Pen (Year 7)
- mechanical Toy (Year 8)
- trophy (Year 8)
Students are set the task of designing and making. They make choices about the product, the aspects of its design and observe, explore and experience a range of materials and tools. They can examine and express their opinions on a number of different designs.
They can:
- practice a range of cutting, joining, shaping and forming processes
- practice a variety of decorative techniques
- use cardboard to model
- investigate smart materials
- test and evaluate their product
Students work on a DMA (Design and Make assignment) where they bring together what they have learned to make a product fit for purpose.
