KS 3 - FOOD



Food Technology at Key Stage 3 gives students opportunities to:

  • Practice basic culinary skills in a kitchen
  • Select and use tools, equipment and processes safely
  • Explore how food products contribute to lifestyle and consumer choices
  • Analyse products and modify proposals to improve them through their development

Students investigate familiar products and explore ingredients. They examine and express their opinions on recipes, altering or changing key ingredients.

Students complete one project in Year 7 and one in Year 8 that incorporate healthy eating. License to Cook begins in September 2008, providing an opportunity for students to gain a qualification by the end of Key Stage 3. The projects taken are:

  • Food technology healthy eating (Year 7)
  • Food Technology/ preparation (Year 8)

Students design and make a range of products from options which include: fruit smoothies, flap jacks, vegetable chowder, apple crumble, scones, pastries and salads.

Students can:

  • become familiar with and more confident in the cooking area
  • safely and hygienically use a range of kitchen equipment
  • weigh and measure accurately
  • investigate diet and nutrition, wise food shopping which includes budgets, environmental issues and labelling
  • test and evaluate their product

Students work on a variety of DMAs (Design and Make Assignments) bringing together what they have learned to make food products fit for purpose.

  • A4 sketchbook, A3 Folder, planner, coloured pencils, drawing pencils, pens, eraser, metric ruler, calculator
