INNOVATION DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

“Design and technology is about making things that people want and that work well”

James Dyson

The Innovation Design & Technology Learning Area is a forward thinking and dynamic learning area preparing students to participate in tomorrow’s changing technological world. Through Innovation Design and Technology, all students become discriminating and informed users of products, and become innovators.

In our industry standard learning environment, students’ interest, enjoyment and curiosity about the technological aspects of their lives flourishes. The excellent physical environment enables our students to produce high quality outcomes, combining practical skills with an understanding of aesthetics and environmental issues. Innovation Design and Technology creates autonomous and creative problem solvers who can work on their own or in teams.

Strong links with the world of work ensure that students gain a good understanding of industrial practices while trips, visits, competitions inspire and enrich our students’ experience of design and technology.

The Academy has just been granted the Design Mark Award.

This award is in recognition for the excellence in design education that the students receive here at The Academy.  This is very prestigious and only seven other secondary schools across the country have been awarded it in the last three years.

Some information from the Design Mark Website:

The Design Mark is a quality standards framework developed jointly by the DCSFThe Design Council and the Design & Technology Association. It is intended as an aspirational badge awarded to primary and secondary schools that demonstrate excellence in their teaching of design. The Design Mark aims to identify and reward primary and secondary schools that are delivering high quality design education to their pupils. The outcomes of the Design Mark are:

  • To promote higher standards in the quality of design education
  • To help schools and pupils better understand the wider role of design in society
  • For schools to develop closer links with professional design practice
  • To raise the status of design in schools and local communities
  • To provide schools with a framework to help them evaluate and self-review standards and practice.
